Deconstructing the Noise Leakage Challenge in Folding Window Systems
For modern mixed-use high-rises, coastal resorts, luxury residential developments, and urban commercial venues, standard bi-fold window systems frequently fall short of stringent acoustic building codes. Traditional multi-panel folding windows inherent structural vulnerabilities: acoustic perimeter air leaks, sash-to-sash hinge gaps, track deflection under wind pressure, and unmitigated low-frequency resonance transmission.
At Novor Front Door Technology Co., Ltd., our structural engineers re-engineered the classic folding mechanism from the extrusion profile inward. By combining multi-cavity thermal break extrusions, continuous EPDM co-extruded gaskets, multi-point compression locking gearboxes, and asymmetric double/triple acoustic laminated glass units, our Soundproof Folding Windows achieve verified noise reduction ratings from 35 dB to 45 dB (STC 38–44 / $R_w$ 37–43 dB).
How Sound Waves Penetrate Bi-Fold Assemblies—and How Novor Counteracts Them
Acoustic performance in glazing systems is governed by mass, stiffness, cavity damping, and perimeter hermetic sealing. Sound waves move through three primary pathways in folding window openings: direct glass transmission, structural vibration through frame aluminum, and perimeter air leakage (flank transmission). A 1% air gap along a folding sash edge can result in up to a 10 dB loss in overall sound isolation performance.
1. Asymmetric Laminated Glazing
Combining glass panes of varying thicknesses (e.g., 6mm + 8mm or 6mm + 1.14mm Acoustic PVB + 6mm) breaks symmetric resonance frequencies, dampening mid-to-high frequency airborne traffic and urban noise.
2. Multi-Cavity PA66 Thermal Strips
Our aluminum extrusions utilize glass-fiber reinforced Polyamide (PA66GF25) thermal barriers filled with high-density polyurethane insulation foam to isolate structural acoustic resonance across profile walls.
3. Dual/Triple EPDM Seal Compression
Heavy-duty multi-point stainless steel shoot bolts draw sashes tightly against vulcanized continuous EPDM weatherstrips, creating an airtight acoustic seal with air permeability under 0.5 $m^3/(h\cdot m^2)$.
